I thought my life was going one direction.
And that meant working outside the home for the first time which changed how I spent my time. For the first time in my adult life an external source determined how I spent much of my time.
My husband’s diagnosis of stage IV colon cancer has changed that direction so that I’m once again keeper of the home.
Well actually, make that two homes.
My husband lives four houses down from me. Not the most traditional set up, but it works for us at the moment. I’ve never been one to follow the rules. Kids are back and forth between the two houses on bikes, my son’s three pickup trucks volley between driveways, and the dog has sunned herself on the sidewalk midway between houses.
Yeah, we just own the whole block. At least we think we do.
So now I have a full summer laid out in front of me before nursing school starts at the end of August. I’m back to my time being driven internally. If I’m not mindful of my time, the leaves will start to turn color and I will not have accomplished a thing.
Of course I want a lot unstructured time with my kids and granddaughter. That’s the joy of summer. But I don’t want that to be an excuse for perpetual laziness.
I’ve come up with 3 LIES WE BELIEVE that keep us from accomplishing the things we desire.
I’ve believed them, so I imagine you may have to.
1. I DON’T HAVE TIME. Life is busy. I get it. but if something is important to us, we will find the time.
For me, a daily walk has been something I’ve done all of my life. I never let newborn babies, a traveling husband, school or jobs–keep me from daily exercise. That is important to me, so I find the time.
But I’d like to be more disciplined in writing and this is a struggle area for me. I need to make time. Saying yes to one thing, means saying no to another. That other thing we say no to may be social media time, tv time, sleeping in time or over scheduling.
If it’s truly important–the time is there. Find a way that works for you to manage the time and schedule it in.
Just remember, saying yes to one thing means saying no to another.
2. I HAVE PLENTY OF TIME. This is a great excuse for procrastination. It’s the ‘someday syndrome’. I’m pretty good at this one. We think we have all the time in the world to accomplish what we want when suddenly the time we thought we had is gone.
Write out what you want to accomplish and by when.
Make two separate lists.
~The first one is a list of the every day important things that need to be done: chores, errands, shopping–the stuff that keeps life running smoothly.
~The second one is a list of things you need to do to reach long term goals. It’s easy to get caught up in the every day important things that need to get done and lose sight of the long term things we want to accomplish. Small, regular steps will be what it takes to reach those long term goals.
Make your lists and take action today.
3. I CAN’T. This is one of the most dangerous lies of all because it’s deeply rooted in our subconscious and it’s hard to dig out. This lie has kept people everywhere and throughout all time in bondage.
The reasons we believe this lie is unique to each of us. Most of the reasons stem from some sort of self-limiting belief.
I garden and there have been times I’ve needed to dig out old shrubs. That is a tough job because they are firmly and deeply rooted. I’ve had to pull bushes out by chaining them to the back of my van. Once it’s out, then I can replace that spot with something beautiful and new.
This is what we need to do with the I can’t lie. Identify it, find the root of it, and dig it out. Then replace that space with God’s truth about you.
When we accept these lies for the horseshit they are and replace them with Truth we will better make use of the time we’ve been given and not allow the ‘I can’ts’ to rob us of wonderful opportunities.
