Fear is what made me put it off.
The fear of failure.
The fear that I’ll try something and be horrible at it.
The fear that I won’t succeed.
The “You can’t” monster has been whispering in my ear since I was in my late teens.
It says things like, “You can’t support yourself.”
“You can’t get a decent job.”
“You can’t be as good as other people.”
Where it came from, I really don’t know, but I believed it. Believing the “I can’ts” is a form of fear.
Many of our fears develop because we believe lies about ourselves. They can be lies others have told us or ones we’ve formed ourselves.
Those lies and fears become baggage that we drag around.
It weighs you down and keeps you from being freakin’ awesome.
The impact of giving in to fear and believing lies is that is can change the course of our lives.
I got married the first time when I was eighteen. The day I got married I knew it wouldn’t last, but I did it anyway because I had no motivation to do anything else.
I believed I couldn’t do anything else.
Lie based on fear.
That was a pretty low thing for me to do to someone. That’s the thing about the fear and lies we believe; it often becomes crap that other people in our lives have to deal with.
So let’s get real.
How do we overcome those fears and lies?
1. We need to understand that fear is NOT from God. God gives us the strength to say, “I got this!” God tells us we’re His and we’re worth something to Him.
Anything to the contrary is bull from Satan and the world.
“For God has given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” ~ 2 Timothy 1:7
2. Change how you think. Even if we understand #1 intellectually it may take a lot of work to undo what we believe about ourselves.
Thoughts are powerful and how you think about yourself will determine how you feel, which will fuel how you act and live.
Change your thoughts. Change your life.
“As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” ~Proverbs 23:7
3. Don’t be fooled. Fear is tricky. It’s voice will sound rational and tell you to stay where it’s safe. Risk is a part of life and moving forward often involves risk.
4. Surrender the outcome to God. Worry will eat you alive and hold you back. Plant the seeds, water them and hand it over to God. Things have a way of working out.
It’s time, People. It’s time to cast fear aside and be freakin’ awesome!
What do you fear and how do you plan to overcome it?
