3 Ways To Handle A Season Of Limbo

Sometimes life finds us in a stage of limbo. Limbo is being in a position of neither moving forward or backward.

The dust is in the air and you have no idea what things will look like when it settles. It could be related to work, a relationship, health, moving, etc.

When being in limbo is outside of your control the result can feed our fears.

We like being in control, don’t we? We wanna say what’s going to happen and when. We want direction and like knowing the course we’re on.

And when we feel that we don’t have control, we are fearful

We hate the unknown–like really, really, hate it, right? We get all sorts of scenarios running through our heads–all the what ifs, all the drama and more what ifs.

But sometimes, for reasons outside of our control, we are in a season of limbo. It may be days, months or even years.

If we’re not careful, a season of limbo can be a breeding ground for depression, a lack of joy, frustration, and a general attitude of “whatever”.

So how do you handle this limbo season in a healthy way?

1. Drop the expectation that you are in control. Drop it now–like a brick. Sometimes you have a say in life and sometimes you don’t. We don’t have control over everything that happens to us. We only have control over how we respond to situations.

I like to meditate on the Bible verse, Jeremiah 29:11 that says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

There is freedom in letting go of control.

2. Accept the moment. I know it’s cliche but live in moment. Accept that where you are now is exactly where you’re supposed to be.

Instead of worrying about what the outcome of your unknown may be and allowing all kinds of crazy scenarios loose in your head–let it go. Even if you have to imaging putting all of that worry in a box and handing over to God, do so.

Be present and engage yourself in the NOW.

3. Examine areas in your life where you can move forward. Just because one area of your life might be in a limbo season, doesn’t mean your entire life must pause.

Different areas of your life are family, friends, education, hobbies, emotional/physical/mental/spiritual health and work/career/finances. Unless you’re in a coma, there’s always an area in life to improve.

All Seasons End

Your time of limbo, in what ever area of life it’s in or how long it lasts, will end.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to look back at that time and say you handled it well? You could say, “Hey look–while this area was in limbo, I concentrated on this and look what I accomplished!”

Be engaged in today, let go of control and move forward where you can.
