3 Self-Limiting Beliefs That Hold You Back

What goes on in our subconscious mind has an impact on our actions or lack of actions.

We hold beliefs about ourselves and the world around us that we are unaware of.

We hold beliefs that can be positive and self affirming, but we also hold beliefs that are negative and self limiting.

The human brain isn’t fully formed until the age of 25 and these beliefs were formed in those years when our brains were in development.

These negative beliefs become self-limiting. They are mental blocks that hold us back from achieving the things that we would like in life. They are our inner demons that tell us that success is for other people – not you.

We hold these negative beliefs because our world isn’t perfect and no matter how wonderful our childhood was, we picked up cues about ourselves, relationships, money, food, health, God and body image that are both positive and negative.

For instance, if you witnessed your parents arguing about money and saw that it stressed their relationship, you may have picked up the cue and formed the belief that money causes relationship stress. This is not something you consciously did, but your subconscious mind, as a child, formed this belief.

As an adult, you may have trouble bringing money into your life. Your subconscious mind is telling you that money causes relationship stress and therefore you repel money from your life.

3 Common Self-Limiting Beliefs

There are many self-limiting beliefs and most of them will fall under these three common ones:

1. I’m not worthy.

2. If I try, I’ll fail.

3. No one will want me.

The “I can’ts”, the “I’m not smart enoughs”, the “I’m not good enoughs”, and the lack of self-care fall under “I’m not worthy”.

The procrastination and the “someday I wills”, fall under “If I try, I’ll fail”.

The self-sabotaged relationships, poor body image, the keeping people at a distance fall under, “No one will want me”.

The effects self-limiting beliefs can have are:

1. They cause procrastination, laziness and lack of self-motivation.

2. They throw you off the path to reaching your goals.

3. They dampen your enthusiasm for life. Your hopes and dreams are diminished.

4. They interfere with healthy relationships.

Honest self examination is the first step to identifying what your self-limiting beliefs are. Sifting through childhood memories is important in finding the root of that belief. Some memories may seem insignificant and you may wonder why you remember something that seems so trivial.

But there’s a reason that memory is there. If you’re trying to find the root of a belief and a memory pops up – pay attention, because most likely it’s significant.

Identifying your self-limiting beliefs is the first step to rooting them out and replacing them with new beliefs. This isn’t always the easiest process and will take some time. In a future post, I’ll talk about overcoming them.
